How Eco-Schools Empower Young Environmental Stewards

Imagine millions of students around the world organizing environmental action in their schools through student-led initiatives. That’s the power of the Eco-Schools programme—the largest sustainability education movement globally.

A Global Movement for Sustainability

The Eco‑Schools programme is active in 67 countries, reaching over 19 million students across some 51,000 schools and institutions, making it the largest international network of students and teachers dedicated to environmental leadership.

The Seven-Step Path to the Green Flag

Eco‑Schools operates around a learner-centered, project-based Seven-Step Framework that enables every school to grow sustainability action in a way that fits their unique context.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Form an Eco-Committee – Student-led teams including teachers, caretakers, and community members drive the programme.
  2. Conduct an Environmental Review – Audit current practices and identify environmental strengths and gaps.
  3. Create an Action Plan – Set SMART goals addressing at least three Eco-Schools themes.
  4. Monitor & Evaluate – Track progress, visualize results, and adjust actions as needed.
  5. Embed into Curriculum – Link environmental topics meaningfully across learning areas.
  6. Inform & Involve – Engage the school and wider community through assemblies, newsletters, or public outreach.
  7. Develop an Eco-Code – Craft a memorable, student-created slogan or pledge that embodies the school’s sustainable values.

Successfully completing these steps allows schools to apply for the prestigious Green Flag Award, which must be renewed annually
